Workplaces today are evolving faster than ever, and so are the needs of employees. Deadlines, hybrid schedules, and the constant pressure to perform often blur the line between professional and personal life. In such an environment, sports and wellness initiatives are no longer “nice to have”; they’re essential for employee well-being.

Forward-thinking companies are beginning to realise that wellness isn’t about quick fixes or perks. It’s about creating cultures where people feel supported, energised, and engaged every day. Let’s explore why corporate wellness programs rooted in sports and holistic well-being are becoming cornerstones of successful workplaces.

Sports and Wellness: More Than Just Physical Health

When people hear “wellness,” they often think only of gym memberships or yoga sessions. But true employee well-being includes mental, emotional, and social health too. Sports and wellness programs offer all three:

Physical health: Regular activity reduces lifestyle diseases, builds energy, and lowers absenteeism.

Mental health: Exercise and play reduce stress, improve focus, and build resilience.

Social health: Group activities foster camaraderie, collaboration, and trust among colleagues.

Think of wellness as a three-legged stool; if one leg is missing, balance is impossible.

The Business Case for Sports and Wellness

Caring for employees is the right thing to do, but it’s also smart business. Organisations that invest in wellness often see:

Higher productivity – A healthy, energised workforce is sharper and more motivated.

Lower absenteeism – Fewer sick days mean teams run smoothly and projects stay on track.

Improved retention – Employees are more likely to stay where they feel cared for.

Stronger culture – Shared activities and healthier routines create positive energy across teams.

Put simply: investing in wellness pays back in both people and performance.

Sports as a Bridge to Employee Engagement

One of the underrated aspects of sports is their ability to break down silos. A cricket match, badminton league, or even a weekly step challenge brings people together across departments and hierarchies.

This is where employee engagement’s importance really shines. Shared experiences outside day-to-day roles help employees bond, communicate better, and feel part of something larger than their to-do list. Over time, this sense of belonging translates into stronger collaboration and higher commitment to the organisation. By tying sports and wellness directly to employee engagement, companies create a culture that feels both vibrant and inclusive.

Wellness for the Modern Workforce

The future of corporate wellness programs is not “one-size-fits-all.” Instead, employees want choice and flexibility. Some prefer high-energy sports; others lean toward mindfulness or holistic practices like meditation. The key is to design wellness initiatives that allow everyone to participate in their own way.

Some ideas include:

Team Sports & Leagues: Cricket, football, badminton, or even pickleball.

Wellness Challenges: Step counts, hydration goals, or cycling to work.

Mindful Breaks: Guided meditation or stress-relief sessions during work hours.

Flexible Access: Partnerships with gyms, apps, or online fitness platforms.

A mix of activities ensures inclusivity and maximises engagement, and strengthens employee engagement’s long-term impact on workplace culture.

Burnout is Real – Wellness is the Antidote

Stress and burnout are among the biggest workplace challenges today. Endless emails, blurred work-life boundaries, and performance pressure often leave employees drained. When left unaddressed, burnout doesn’t just affect individuals; it impacts morale, productivity, and retention across the board.

This is where sports and wellness act as buffers. Physical activity releases endorphins, wellness sessions provide coping tools, and a culture of care reassures employees that their health truly matters. More than just reducing stress, these initiatives signal: you are valued, not just your output. This care-first approach becomes the foundation of employee engagement’s most authentic form.

Leadership Matters in Wellness

For wellness initiatives to truly succeed, leaders must walk the talk. When managers join a morning run, participate in a sports event, or encourage breaks without guilt, they send a powerful message – that balance matters.

Leadership-driven wellness not only inspires participation but also creates a ripple effect where employees feel permission to prioritise their health without fear of judgment. Wellness becomes part of the organisational DNA, not a side activity.

Making Wellness a Culture, Not a Campaign

The most successful organisations don’t treat wellness as a one-day initiative or annual campaign. They embed it into everyday culture:

Scheduling walking meetings instead of sitting all day.

Encouraging small, consistent wellness habits like mindful breaks.

Recognising employees who champion health and balance.

Reviewing policies like caregiving support or flexible hours through a wellness lens.

This cultural shift is what transforms wellness from a checkbox into a lived experience, where employee well being is at the heart of every workplace practice.

Summary

The importance of sports and wellness for employee well-being cannot be overstated. From reducing burnout to strengthening teamwork, from improving productivity to creating happier workplaces, the benefits ripple across every level of the organisation.

At Kelp, we believe every workplace has the power to create spaces where wellness thrives. Through thoughtfully designed corporate wellness programs, we help organisations prioritise people, and performance follows.

After all, when employees feel cared for, engaged, and energised, they don’t just work better, they live better. And that’s the real win.

The Reality Behind the Rainbow

Despite growing awareness, LGBTQIA+ individuals in India continue to face significant barriers at their workplaces.

A Deloitte report from 2023 reveals that nearly 70% of LGBTQIA+ employees in India have encountered non-inclusive behaviour at work, far higher than the global average of 42%. These behaviours range from microaggressions and being left out of conversations to more explicit forms of discrimination and harassment.

For transgender and non-binary individuals, the picture is even more troubling. According to Queerbeat, only 6% of LGBTQIA+ employees in India identify as transgender, non-binary, or genderqueer. The low visibility isn’t just a matter of numbers, it reflects systemic exclusion and fear of discrimination. Many trans professionals face a “double bind” of limited employment opportunities and workplace hostility, pushing some to hide their identities or leave jobs altogether.

Globally, 46% of LGBTQIA+ workers say they have been treated unfairly at work, and transgender employees earn 32% less than their cisgender peers. These statistics aren’t just numbers, they point to a deep, structural inequality that persists despite corporate messaging.

The Cost of Exclusion

Discrimination not only harms individuals, it also carries a cost for organisations and the economy. A World Bank study estimates that homophobia and exclusion in the workplace could be costing India up to 1.7% of its GDP. When employees feel unsafe or unsupported, they are more likely to disengage or leave. Nearly a third of LGBTQIA+ employees have considered quitting due to non-inclusive environments.

This kind of turnover affects productivity, increases hiring and training costs, and undermines team morale. Inclusion, therefore, isn’t just the right thing to do, but it’s smart business.

What Real Inclusion Looks Like?

True inclusion demands a year-round, company-wide commitment. Here’s what organisations can do:

Leadership Commitment: Senior leaders must walk the talk, by visibly and vocally supporting LGBTQIA+ inclusion.

Inclusive Policies: Anti-discrimination policies should explicitly cover sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression.

Safe Spaces: Employee resource groups (ERGs) can empower LGBTQIA+ voices and help create support systems.

Education & Training: Regular workshops on unconscious bias, inclusive language, and allyship can transform workplace culture.

Equitable Benefits: Policies like gender-neutral parental leave, trans-inclusive healthcare, and partner benefits ensure fairness.

Moving Beyond Performative Pride

Pride Month is an important time for celebration, reflection, and advocacy. But if inclusion ends once the rainbow decorations come down, we’ve missed the point.

Inclusion should be embedded in workplace culture, not just as a marketing strategy but as a core value. When LGBTQIA+ professionals feel safe, seen, and supported each day, organisations benefit from diverse perspectives, loyal teams, and stronger innovation.

Let’s make Pride not just a month, but a mindset that shapes our workplaces all year round.

In today’s hustle-driven culture, feeling “burnt out” is often dismissed as part of the job. But burnout isn’t just being tired, it’s a serious mental health red flag. When left unaddressed, it can disrupt lives, derail careers, and damage the very fabric of healthy workplaces. So the real question is: Is your workplace truly addressing the signs of burnout?

What is Burnout – Really?

The World Health Organisation classifies burnout as an “occupational phenomenon” resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. It is characterised by:

Emotional exhaustion

Reduced professional efficacy

Increased mental distance from one’s job or feelings of cynicism

Burnout saps energy, and it affects morale, productivity, and retention. 78% of employees in India experience job burnout, leading to physical and emotional exhaustion, as per a study conducted across 10 countries, including India.

Why Burnout Deserves Urgent Attention

Burnout isn’t just a personal issue, it’s an organisational concern. When employees suffer silently, the ripple effect hits teams, leadership, and culture. Symptoms like absenteeism, presenteeism, conflicts, or disinterest may go unnoticed or misunderstood as laziness or disengagement.

Moreover, burnout can sometimes stem from environments that are unsafe, toxic or non-inclusive, where expectations are unclear, recognition is absent, and respect is minimal. For women and marginalized communities, burnout may even be rooted in harassment, microaggressions or exclusion.

Mental Health in the Workplace: A Must-Have, Not a Good-to-Have

Creating safe, respectful, and thriving workplaces involves embedding mental well-being into the culture. That means:

Recognising mental health as integral to employee wellness.

Training managers to identify early signs of burnout and respond empathetically.

Listening actively to feedback, rather than waiting for exit interviews.

Implementing clear policies and offering confidential reporting channels for workplace harassment, bullying, or toxic leadership, often unseen triggers for burnout.

What Can Workplaces Do?

Promote Psychological Safety: Employees should feel safe expressing struggles without fear of judgment or backlash.

Encourage Work-Life Boundaries: Normalise saying no to after-hours calls and unrealistic workloads.

Offer Mental Health Resources: Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs), therapy reimbursements, and periodic wellness check-ins can go a long way.

Revisit Policies Through a Mental Health Lens: Include burnout awareness under your wellness training modules to help teams understand the link between psychological safety and respectful workplaces.

Walk the Talk: Leadership must model balance and wellness. Employees are more likely to seek help when they see it’s respected from the top.

Conclusion

At Kelp, we believe that mental health in the workplace is non-negotiable. As champions of respectful, inclusive, and harassment-free cultures, we help organisations not just respond, but proactively prevent the conditions that lead to burnout.

Burnout isn’t a badge of honour. It’s a call for help. And if workplaces start truly listening, we can create cultures where people don’t just survive but thrive.

It’s Monday, and for most employees, the start of the new workweek often brings the well-known “Monday Blues.” Anxiety and low morale often arise from transitioning between the freedom of the weekend and returning to the workplace on Monday. These feelings do have psychological roots rather than just to be taken for their anecdote.

According to new research, mental health conditions lead to an average loss of 18 million days at work per year. This can greatly impact morale and productivity in the workplace, frequently leading to decreased employee motivation. However, small initiatives can transform Mondays from habitually dreadful to delightful.

Let’s change the narrative. Let’s make Mondays the start of the week, not the end of the weekend!

Anxiety and low morale often arise from transitioning between the freedom of the weekend and returning to the structured workplace on Monday. The psychological effects of this transition can manifest in various forms, including stress, lack of concentration, and passing disinterest.

Understanding these dynamics is essential to building a positive workplace culture. By acknowledging the prevalence of the Monday Blues and their emotional impact on employees, management can proactively develop strategies to enhance work camaraderie, with employee wellness programs ultimately reducing the stress associated with this challenging state of mind.

Small acts that can make Monday mornings more enjoyable include:

Host a Potluck

With minimal coordination and budget, HR can host potlucks that enable teams to show off their culinary skills, enjoy a variety of foods from different cultures, and create bonding and team-building opportunities.
Add a twist and have teams “host” potlucks for other teams… Not only will that promote cross functional collaboration and engagement, it can bring out a healthy competitive spirit that will always have a delicious ending where everyone wins!

Organise a “Monday Treat Table” where everyone brings something sweet or savoury. This act has the power of lighting up spirits and fostering team bonding.

Leave Encouraging Notes

Words have great power and can greatly boost office morale. Simple phrases like “I appreciate you because…” or “You inspire me; thank you for…” can make a significant impact. Consider providing pre-written sticky notes for employees to share.

Celebrate Small Wins

Recognition is necessary to maintain employee motivation and positivity, regardless of the size of the achievement. One can have a ‘Monday Appreciation Board’ on which members can post shoutouts regarding colleagues’ achievements in the previous week.

Install a “Blue Bell” that employees can ring every time they want to appreciate a colleague or share a success story, no matter how big or small. Catering to the auditory senses and breaking into the white noise at work also play a role in changing the mood in a positive way.

Conduct a Wellness Session

To combat the Monday Blues and promote overall mental and physical well-being, organising classes such as yoga, meditation breaks, and quick fitness sessions can help employees reconnect with themselves as they start the week.

Organise a 15-minute “Step up and Stretch” session during the post-lunch or evening times when employees feel the most drained. Encourage everyone to step away from their screens or work desks and do some simple stretching and eye movement exercises to recharge.

Kelp provides services that help companies organise events, workshops and seminars focused on employee wellness.

The Ripple Effect of Positivity
Small gestures can significantly impact individual lives and create a positive working environment. When one person acts kindly or offers support, it often inspires others to follow suit, fostering appreciation and camaraderie.

This effect is especially powerful in virtual offices, where isolation is common. Simple acts, like virtual coffee breaks and playful nicknames, can motivate remote workers and help them feel valued, even from a distance.

Conclusion

The evidence for “Monday blues” is clear: small, intentional efforts are essential for creating a positive work environment. Actions such as providing treats, leaving encouraging notes, and celebrating small wins are not just lovely gestures but critical for boosting employee morale and productivity. As Monday approaches, it is imperative that we adopt these strategies within our organisation.

Let’s not settle for merely bearable Mondays; make them a day to look forward to! By prioritising employee wellness and implementing robust corporate wellness programs, we can significantly enhance our workweek and improve the lives of our employees.

At KelpHR, we encourage you to share your insights and experiences in combating Monday blues! It’s crucial to recognise that thoughtful actions lead to a healthier, more vibrant workplace. Remember, “Kelp can Help” drive health and wellness for employees. Together, we will transform Mondays into days of positivity and energy!

We all experience moments of sadness and stress in our lives, but when these feelings linger and begin to affect our daily functioning, it may be a sign of depression. Distinguishing between normal sadness and depression is crucial for seeking appropriate help. In this article, we will explore the indicators of depression, self-help strategies, and practical tips to navigate through challenging times.

Is it Depression or Sadness?

While sadness is a temporary emotional response to upsetting situations, depression is characterized by persistent feelings of sadness that impact various aspects of life. Understanding the symptoms of depression can help determine if you are experiencing more than just temporary sadness. Common symptoms include persistent sadness, irritability, fatigue, changes in eating and sleeping patterns, difficulty concentrating, loss of interest in activities, feelings of worthlessness or guilt, restlessness, and hopelessness. If you have been experiencing these symptoms for more than two weeks, it’s important to reflect on your well-being and take proactive steps to care for yourself.

Self-Help Strategies to Combat Depression

Dealing with depression doesn’t always require clinical intervention. Many simple self-care strategies can make a significant difference in managing your mood. Here are some effective techniques to consider:

Reach out and talk to someone: Sharing your emotions and experiences with a trusted individual can alleviate the burden of depression. Remember that seeking help is not a sign of weakness. Find someone who will lend a listening ear without judgment or pressure to fix your situation.

Engage in regular exercise: Though it may be challenging, physical activity has been proven to boost mood. Engage in activities such as walking, cycling, jogging, dancing, playing with pets or children, practicing yoga, or following online exercise classes. Even short bursts of exercise can have a positive impact on your well-being.

Prioritize a healthy diet: The food we consume plays a significant role in our mental and physical well-being. While sugary and carb-rich snacks may seem tempting during low moments, focusing on a balanced diet of protein, carbohydrates, fruits, and vegetables can provide sustained energy levels. Avoid excessive alcohol and caffeine consumption, as they can negatively affect your mood.

Soak in the sunlight: Exposure to sunlight increases serotonin levels, which contribute to regulating mood and sleep. Spending time outdoors, especially during the morning or early afternoon, can have a positive impact on your overall well-being.

Improve sleep quality: Adequate sleep is vital for maintaining mental health. Establish a regular sleep routine, avoid daytime napping, limit alcohol and caffeine intake, and engage in regular exercise to promote better sleep quality.

Practice constructive self-talk: Challenge negative thoughts and replace them with positive, supportive self-talk. Be kind to yourself, question whether you would say such things to a loved one and cultivate gratitude to shift your mindset towards a more positive outlook.

Remember, progress takes time: Each person’s journey with depression is unique, so be patient with yourself. Focus on accomplishing your most critical tasks each day and avoid becoming discouraged if you have setbacks or days where you achieve less than expected.

By recognizing the signs of depression and implementing self-help strategies, you can take control of your mental well-being. Remember to seek professional help if your symptoms persist or worsen. Prioritize self-care, surround yourself with support, and be proactive in managing your mood. With time and effort, you can navigate through depression and create a healthier, happier life.

At Kelp we believe that having a safe, inclusive and happy workplace is the key to businesstransformation and growth and physical as well as mental health and wellness is the key to healthy and happy employees and workforces.

Job satisfaction encompasses two key concepts: “job” and “satisfaction.” To fully grasp its meaning, we need to explore these words individually.

The Job Aspect

Many people view a job merely as a means to an end, a way to meet their financial obligations. However, a job is much more than that, considering the significant amount of time individuals spend at work. When people don’t experience growth in their roles, sustaining their enthusiasm and commitment becomes challenging.

The Satisfaction Aspect

This is where satisfaction comes into play. Without a sense of fulfillment, a job remains just a job—lacking the motivation to improve and excel. It is crucial for individuals to feel they are utilizing their potential and making meaningful contributions. Without this sense of accomplishment, the essence of a job diminishes.

Recognizing Job Dissatisfaction

Feeling dissatisfied with one’s job is a common experience at different stages in life. Whether it occurs early in a career, mid-stage, or later, most people encounter this feeling at some point. Recognizing these feelings is essential for striving toward something better.

Signs of Job Dissatisfaction

Avoidance: Making excuses not to go to work.

Lack of Motivation: Feeling demotivated to offer creative ideas and suggestions.

Silence: Once vocal and engaged employees becoming quiet.

Disengagement: Focusing solely on the paycheck rather than the work itself.

Unhappiness: Feeling unhappy about going to work, turning it into a chore.

When these signs appear, it’s crucial to pause and understand the underlying issues.

Addressing Job Dissatisfaction

Recognizing these signs is the first step, but taking action is often more challenging. Engaging in activities outside of work that bring joy can help mitigate the feelings of demotivation.

Balancing Life and Work

Remember, a job is just one aspect of life. Finding fulfillment outside of work can alleviate some of the dissatisfaction experienced at work.

Seeking Deeper Understanding

It’s essential to delve deeper to understand the root causes of job dissatisfaction. Personal life circumstances can intertwine with job-related issues, leading to a sense of disconnection. During these times, seeking help from a professional or a trusted source can be beneficial.

Reflecting Before Making Decisions

Before deciding to leave a job, it’s important to pause, reflect, and consider all factors. How we feel internally greatly impacts our actions and decisions. Taking time to introspect can help identify the true source of dissatisfaction.

Personal Growth Through Job Challenges

This journey of introspection and reflection is crucial for personal growth. Some may realize they chose their career path due to external pressures, and recognizing this can lead to meaningful changes. It’s never too late to change direction if something feels more aligned with your true self.

Embracing Change

Fear of the unknown often holds us back from making necessary changes. However, happiness lies in making choices aligned with our true selves. Consistent dissatisfaction is a clear signal to reassess, recharge, and seek work that resonates with your being.

As time and experiences shape us, what once worked may no longer be fulfilling. Embracing change is essential for growth and realizing our highest potential. Sometimes, the best course of action is to step back, think, introspect, and seek help if needed. A job should be a path to self-discovery, with satisfaction as the reward for this journey.

“Any problem, big or small, within a family always seems to start with bad communication. Someone isn’t listening.” – Emma Thompson

Every family is a unique blend of its own; however, we all confront turbulent times at some point in our lives as a family. Some families may face financial issues, whereas others may face emotional disconnect. The fact is, families around the world struggle with similar, if not identical, problems. These problems can very easily tear apart families and scar the members mentally. Hence, to avoid such extreme outcomes, it is important to seek timely professional intervention. However, what are these problems that require external intervention? And how can someone from the outside help us? Let’s get into understanding some of these common issues and how a counsellor can help us:

Navigating and Adjusting to Major Life Transitions

Changes like a parent getting a new job can still have an indirect effect on children by creating stress and instability. For instance, starting a new job might mean longer workdays, more stress, distraction, altering family schedules, or a change in income.

The following are some significant life transitions to be aware of:

Relocating to a new location.

The arrival of a new kid

Divorce or separation

Change of employment

Substantial additional responsibilities

A persistent sickness or significant medical issue

Natural Calamity

Bereavement in the family

A family therapist may offer a secure environment for talking about worries. expressing feelings and creating a place to maintain stronger bonds at a time of upheaval or transition.

Tension between a parent and child

This is something that is common at most ages, however, there is one stage where the turbulence is significantly higher and that is with Adolescents. Adolescents frequently deal with challenges such as significant hormonal shifts, the drive for independence, the need to blend in with their peers, and low self-esteem during this time in their lives. It may be a very difficult period, and it’s normal for kids to be erratic or irritable, push back against their parents, or isolate themselves. This is a challenging time for many parents, and it’s usually accompanied by chaos, more disputes, or emotional distancing in the household.

According to a case study that was published in the journal of Psychiatry, amid turbulent adolescent challenges, the whole family is frequently in distress, even if the teenager is the one who is exhibiting symptoms. Family therapy may help everyone in the unit’s mental health while teaching parents how to be there for one another, express concerns, set appropriate limits, and communicate expectations.

When a family member struggles with substance abuse disorder

This can be a challenging situation for the entire family. Family counselling or therapy may be beneficial for the entire family in addition to individual counselling support groups, treatments, and/or rehab programmes for the person with substance abuse disorder. In the course of family therapy, members can talk about their experiences and worries, learn coping mechanisms, and receive medication from the therapist to help de-stigmatise substance use disorders and relapse warning signs.

Past trauma, a traumatic childhood

Phrases like “Let’s keep the past in the past” are frequently heard. But sometimes, things that happened in the past can have a lasting effect if they are not addressed. For instance, traumatic childhood events, such as witnessing or experiencing physical or verbal abuse, may linger long after the unpleasant event. While many families may wish to forget about these events or find it difficult to discuss them, if they are not dealt with, the damage can increase. A family therapist may teach the family strategies for navigating and validating one another’s feelings as well as information about how the body reacts to trauma.

One can approach a family therapist for multiple issues; however, the ones listed above are a few common problems that a counsellor is often dealing with. To summaries, the goal of family counselling is to create and preserve strong, effective family bonds. The objective is to recognize and resolve family issues. These problems could be behavioural, psychological, or emotional in nature. With timely intervention and the right approach, family counselling can lead to the following positive outcomes:

Establishment of sound and strong boundaries.

Enhanced relationships and family dynamics.

Clarified roles within the family.

Better communication.

Family members equipped with healthy support and coping mechanisms.

Enhanced family capacity for solving problems.

Reduced conflicts.

Increased empathy for one another.

Increased understanding and acceptance.

Have you encountered individuals at the workplace whose working style is distinctly different from everyone on the team?

Have you felt that a particular employee takes conversations to a different tangent during discussions frequently?

Have you witnessed colleagues who struggle with social interactions and get easily tired after office parties?

Or have you seen colleagues coming up with creative out-of-box ideas that surprise everyone on the team?

Such individuals are most likely to be in the neuro-divergent spectrum, and it’s essential to accept and acknowledge these differences so that the employees on the spectrum, the team, and the organization can function seamlessly. Organizations need to create an inclusive workplace that accepts neuro-divergent individuals and gives them a space to be their true authentic selves. The creation of such a space is a joint responsibility of the leaders, employee allies, and management.

In many situations, due to a lack of awareness about how neuro-divergence must be managed, organizations witness employees on the neuro-divergent spectrum undergoing burnout and, in the worst case, resigning from their jobs. To overcome such workplace burnout, the organization and the individuals on the spectrum must work together for holistic productivity

Challenges encountered by the neuro-divergent employee at the workplace:

Managing deadlines is a common challenge for neuro-divergent individuals in corporate environments.

Inflexible, rigid deadlines focused on immediacy can cause intense stress.

Repeated cycles of intense stress can lead to burnout and shutdown.

Managers often struggle to trust and understand the working style of neuro-divergent employees.

This lack of understanding can lead to micromanagement.

Managers may refuse to provide flexibility, such as working from home, which is essential for many on the spectrum.

High productivity expectations from managers may not be met by neuro-divergent employees which can lead to disagreements.

Lack of transparent communication between managers and employees can exacerbate these issues.

Providing support to a neuro-divergent individual at the workplace

So, how can an organization and the team offer support to an individual on the neurodivergent spectrum? With the difficulties mentioned above encountered by the individual daily, it becomes quintessential to create a structure and system in place to support neurodivergent individuals at the workplace. Here’s what organizations can do:

Provide Organizational Accommodations

Flexible work environments.

Work-from-home options.

Ambient spaces with comfortable lighting and sound.

Provide Support for Information Processing Needs

Providing meeting agendas in advance.

Offering agendas in written, audio, and video formats.

Techniques for Supporting Neuro-Divergent Employees

Strategic and Kind Communication.

Energy Management.

Addresses issues of stress and overworking.

Enabling Self-Advocacy

Helps communicate boundaries and expectations.

Supports the needs of neuro-divergent individuals.

Encouraging Disclosure and Support

Importance of neuro-divergent individuals communicating their needs clearly.

Organizations should demonstrate support and facilities.

Reduces shame and fear, encouraging individuals to reveal their diagnosis.

Facilitates workplace accommodations and support.

In a world of neurotypicals, neurodivergent individuals are outliers with untapped potential, waiting to be harnessed. With one in 36 children being diagnosed with autism according to the CDC (Centre for Disease Control) in an American Academy of Pediatrics publication, and many adults with late diagnosis having workplace adjustment issues, organizations need to create an inclusive work environment by providing accommodations to employees to work comfortably and with acceptance. Employees on the spectrum are humans born with differences and if given a chance, would give every organization that supports them, loyalty, creativity, and an edge above the rest.

“Great work is born from a combination of hard work and a healthy mindset”

Wouldn’t it be great if a majority of employees across all organizations would continue working for the long term? Wouldn’t it be just ideal if there was a chance for each employee to have a steady career progression chart, and show signs of delight and satisfaction at the workplace? And it would be just unreal if all employees felt safe, secure, accepted and involved at their respective workplaces.

Now the above-mentioned statements are a reality for those organizations that have successfully generated and promoted a Healthy Workplace.

World Health Organization (WHO) suggests ‘ A healthy workplace is one in which workers and managers collaborate to use a continual improvement process to protect and promote the health, safety and wellbeing of all workers and maintaining the sustainability of the workplace.’

In essence, the key to creating and sustaining a high-performing organization is promoting a healthy workplace. ‘Healthy’ here is not just limited to the physical health of its employees. It encompasses different factors that create a holistic environment for the organization to achieve its long and short-term objectives.

One of the foremost signs of a healthy workplace is the Physical Work environment offered. This means, there is maximum protection for all workers and employees against hazards of health and safety. A systematic communication channel reiterates the safety rules to be followed by all. Once all employees and workers feel physically safe, they tend to put their attention to the tasks to be completed.

Similarly, organizations do need to focus on the Psychosocial work environment created. This indicates the work stressors, the social conditions and the accepted, implemented values and attitudes of the members. A healthy workplace will have real-time space for its employees to use their voice in matters they believe in. A healthy workplace will create mindfully safe zones for all employees, thus inching towards lesser absenteeism and a positive retention rate. Being a Psychosocially aware organization will include honest feedback systems, with a free-flowing appreciation for a job well done.

Being supportive on a psychological note will be in complete synergy when the organization has an open play for offering Personal Health Resources. It can be as simple as offering mandatory medical checkups yearly or offering flexibility to employees in times of need. Many researches have shown the active rate of institutions offering yoga and breathing coaching to employees who have registered a satisfied, energetic and happy workforce. The quote ‘Tough times do not last, but Tough people do’ indicates mentally and physically resilient people who can take on challenges. Promoting a healthy workplace will be a blend of emotionally safe, physically optimum workplaces. Since time immemorial, India has been a champion of service to others. The idea of helping, developing and nurturing the society at large is the foundation of Indian thought. The ultimate pillar of promoting a healthy workplace encompasses community involvement, the said community being beyond the day-to-day work scope. A healthy workplace will idealize the service for the larger good.

Conclusion

A healthy workplace is where people perform their jobs without getting sick or injured accidentally because of their work. A healthy workplace is also where employees have enhanced opportunities to grow and develop physically, emotionally and socially. To promote a healthy workplace is to preserve harmony with nature and be in tune with the requirements of its human capital.

“Life is very interesting- in the end, some of your greatest pains become your greatest strengths”- Drew Barrymore

Life is a unique event. It pans out differently for each 788-crore people on our planet. The only fact that remains similar is that everyone goes through ups and downs. Some face a tough childhood, maybe in the war zones of the world. The other may have sleepless nights due to frequent hospital visits for a loved one. Another may be dealing with a toxic environment at work or home. But therein lies the beauty of humankind. We are courageous beings. We have to navigate through the course of life no matter what it brings. Resilience in its essence is reflected in Phil Dunphy’s words from Modern Family when he says, “When life gives you lemonade, make lemons. Life will be all like WHAT?”

Building resilience predominantly means learning to adapt to the various circumstances of life. It means having physical, mental and emotional flexibility to overcome the topsy-turvy bends of life. Resilience is bouncing back, standing tall and having an unshakable spirit to face life. J.K Rowling said, “Rock bottom became the solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life.’ This statement is a classic ode to building resilience.

The moment of crisis is always sudden and uncalled for. At such times, it is imperative to learn how to build resilience in life. One of the foremost steps to take on the path to building resilience is finding for yourself, one or a group of people who are the most trustworthy confidants in life. They can be friends, family member(s), a work colleague. When there is real-time, non-judgemental space between them, one can talk their heart out and seek help. A cup of hot beverage or a long drive with good music or simple flowing conversations are important parts towards building resilience. These little moments become heartwarming instances where one feels safe enough to let their guard down and receive love, attention, and care when one is at their lowest.

There is a lot of open discussion about many Indians finally seeking professional help to get through tough times in life. Professional help or therapy inches a person to feel better, understand themselves better and work towards building a stronger, yet more vulnerable foundation of self. It is a beautiful moment of catharsis when one approaches life and its troubles in a more guided way. It inculcates fearlessness which is again an aspect of being resilient in life.

Building resilience is also being self-aware and working on the tolerance level of the self. It is understanding the big and the small triggers that direct a reaction instead of a response. Now it may seem impossible to use logic and reaction when one is faced with a major life jittering event. But that is where the next step of building resilience comes in. Understand the situation. The most doable trick is to use a pen and paper and jot down all the problems. This will help in clearing the mind and the headspace giving oneself a chance to look at multiple aspects holistically. When one understands and analyzes the circumstances at hand, it is a victory that brings a significant sprout of resilience.

Probably the most difficult aspect of building resilience to face difficulties is to take a step back and consciously introspect. Walk inwards, towards the core of your being. Prod the questions Who, What, How. Burn the fire within to get a glance of the diamond that you are. Self-realization, though not easy, is the best answer to life’s examination. This journey within, fortunately or unfortunately cannot happen with company. It has to be taken up alone, as Ravindranath Tagore said, ‘Ekla Cholo re.’ This process will become the most rewarding event you have ever come across in life.

At the very end, the most crucial rope in building resilience is growing spiritually. It means acknowledging the presence of a God you believe in, or a Supreme Power that is guiding your way ahead. Many times, when life feels like it’s falling apart, it is the universe making space for something grand, more precious in your life. Learn to look at each life event as divine intervention and see how life manifests. Incling towards spirituality will build an internal strength in your core. Being spiritual will set you free.

Conclusion

Building resilience is not an overnight episode. It is the determination to live life well, with minimum regrets. Cultivating the character of body and mind requires tireless efforts in the correct direction. It means being constantly reminded of Shri Krishna’s message- Strive in your path and do not worry about the outcome. Whatever shall happen, shall be for the best.

Sure, there are going to be a few mistakes and therefore, resilience is learning to savor each flavor of life.

As Albus Dumbledore said “Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times- only if one remembers to turn on the light” The light is resilience. The light is the self. The light is the Supreme.

“In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me, lay an invincible summer”
