My construction company has a lot of men with good qualification and experience – but no women. There are only 5 women – Most of them don’t plan to continue working for more than a year. Is it mandatory for the President and 50% of the IC members to be women. We can have 2 women be a part of the IC, but they can’t be the President. What can we do?
As per the Sexual Harassment of Women at the Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act 2013, it is mandatory for the President of the IC, to be a woman.
As many statistics has shown, having a diverse workforce helps in better productivity and creativity. Even if you have a few women only, it is necessary to select the most senior and suitable person to Head the IC.
In the future, you may need to also decide to hire a higher proportion of women to ensure there is some parity at the Workplace. Also train the existing ones to take on this role, as well be a part of the IC, as a member. Since the members can be on the board only for a term of 3years, its important to plan ahead on how the pipeline would look like.
